ऋषयऊचुः।
कथंव्यासेनकथितंपुराणंगारुडंतव।
एतत्सर्वंसमाख्याहिपरंविष्णुकथाश्रयम्॥१,२.१॥
ṛṣaya ūcuḥ
kathaṃ vyāsena kathitaṃ purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ tava
etatsarvaṃ samākhyāhi paraṃ viṣṇukathāśrayam | 1,2.1||
The sages said, how did Vyāsadeva narrate to you the Purāṇas known as Garuḍa? Please explain to me the entire story of Lord Viṣṇu.
सूतउवाच।
अहंहिमुनिभिःसार्धंगतोबदरिकाश्रमम्।
तत्रदृष्टोमयाव्यासोध्यायमानःपरेश्वरम्॥१,२.२॥
sūta uvāca
ahaṃ hi munibhiḥ sārdhaṃ gato badarikāśramam
tatra dṛṣṭo mayā vyāso dhyāyamānaḥ pareśvaram | 1,2.2||
Sūta Gosvāmī said: I went to the Badarika ashram accompanied by the sages. There I saw Vyāsadeva meditating on the Supreme LordViṣṇu.
तंप्रणम्योपविष्टोऽहंपृष्टवान्हिमुनीश्वरम्।
taṃ praṇamyopaviṣṭo’haṃ pṛṣṭavānhi munīśvaram
I bowed down to him and sat down and inquired of him.
सूतउवाच।
व्यासब्रूहिहरेरूपंजगत्सर्गादिकंततः॥१,२.३॥
sūta uvāca
vyāsa brūhi hare rūpaṃ jagatsargādikaṃ tataḥ | 1,2.3||
O Vyāsadeva, please tell me about the form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and how the universe was created?
मन्येध्यायसितंयस्मात्तस्माज्जानासितंविभुम्।
एवंपृष्टोयथाप्राहतथाविप्रा?निबोधत॥१,२.४॥
manye dhyāyasi taṃ yasmāttasmājjānāsi taṃ vibhum
evaṃ pṛṣṭo yathā prāha tathā viprā?nibodhata | 1,2.4||
O brāhmaṇas, I think that you are meditating upon Him, and therefore you know Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
व्यासउवाच।
शृणुसूत ! प्रवक्ष्यामिपुराणंगारुडंतव।
सहनारददक्षाद्यैर्ब्रह्मामामुक्तवान्यथा॥१,२.५॥
vyāsa uvāca
śṛṇu sūta ! pravakṣyāmi purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ tava
saha nāradadakṣādyairbrahmā māmuktavānyathā | 1,2.5||
Vyasa said, Listen, Suta!Along with Nārada, Dakṣa and others, I shall now describe to you the Garuḍa Puran, as Lord Brahmā explained to me.
सूतउवाच।
दक्षनारदमुख्यैस्तुयुक्तंत्वांकथमुक्तवान्।
ब्रह्माश्रीगारुडंपुण्यंपुराणंसारवाचकम्॥१,२.६॥
sūta uvāca
dakṣanāradamukhyaistu yuktaṃ tvāṃ kathamuktavān
brahmā śrīgāruḍaṃ puṇyaṃ purāṇaṃ sāravācakam | 1,2.6||
Sūta Gosvāmī said: How did Lord Brahmā explain to you the sacred Purāṇas, known as Śrī Garuḍa, which explain the essence of the Purāṇas, in the presence of Dakṣa and Nārada?
व्यासउवाच।
अहंहिनारदोदक्षोभृग्वाद्याःप्रणिपत्यतम्।
सारंब्रूहीतिपप्रच्छुर्ब्रह्माणंब्रह्मलोकगम्॥१,२.७॥
vyāsa uvāca
ahaṃ hi nārado dakṣo bhṛgvādyāḥ praṇipatya tam
sāraṃ brūhīti papracchurbrahmāṇaṃ brahmalokagam | 1,2.7||
Vyāsadeva said: I am, Nārada, Dakṣa and others like Bhṛgu bowed down to Lord Brahmā and inquired from him, “Please tell me the essence of life.
ब्रह्मोवाच।
पुराणंगारुडंसारंरुद्रंचमांयथा।
सुरैःसहाब्रवीद्विष्णुस्तथाहंव्यासवच्मिते॥१,२.८॥
brahmovāca
purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ sāraṃ rudraṃ ca māṃ yathā
suraiḥ sahābravīdviṣṇustathāhaṃ vyāsa vacmite | 1,2.8||
Lord Brahmā said: O Vyāsadeva, just as Lord Viṣṇu, along with the demigods, spoke to Me about the Purāṇas, Garuḍa, Sāra and Rudra, so I am.
व्यासउवाच।
कथंरुद्रंसुरैःसार्धमब्रवीद्वैहरिःपुरा।
पुराणंगारुडंसारंब्रूहिब्रह्मन्महार्थकम्॥१,२.९॥
vyāsa uvāca
kathaṃ rudraṃ suraiḥ sārdhamabravīdvai hariḥ purā
purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ sāraṃ brūhi brahmanmahārthakam | 1,2.9||
Vyāsadeva said: O brāhmaṇa, how did Lord Hari in the past address Lord Śiva along with the demigods?
ब्रह्मोवाच।
अहंगतोऽद्रिंकैलासमिन्द्राद्यैर्दैवतैःसह।
तत्रदृष्टोमयारुद्रोध्यायमानःपरंपदम्॥१,२.१०॥
brahmovāca
ahaṃ gato’driṃ kailāsamindrādyairdaivataiḥ saha
tatra dṛṣṭo mayā rudro dhyāyamānaḥ paraṃ padam | 1,2.10||
Lord Brahmā said: I went to mount Kailāsa with Indra and other demigods. There I saw Lord Śiva meditating on His supreme abode.
पृष्टोनमस्कृतःकिंत्वंदेवंध्यायसिशङ्कर? ।
त्वत्तोनान्यंपरंदेवंजानामिब्रूहिमांततः॥१,२.११॥
pṛṣṭo namaskṛtaḥ kiṃ tvaṃ devaṃ dhyāyasi śaṅkara?
tvatto nānyaṃ paraṃ devaṃ jānāmi brūhi māṃ tataḥ | 1,2.11||
Asked and bowed down, do you meditate on the Lord, Shankara?
सारात्सारतरंतत्त्वंश्रोतुकामःसुरैःसह।
sārātsārataraṃ tattvaṃ śrotukāmaḥ suraiḥ saha
He wanted to hear the essence of the truth with the demigods.
रुद्रौवाच।
अहंध्यायामितंविष्णुंपरमात्मानमीश्वरम्॥१,२.१२॥
rudrauvāca
ahaṃ dhyāyāmi taṃ viṣṇuṃ paramātmānamīśvaram | 1,2.12||
Lord Śiva said: I meditate upon that Supreme Soul, Lord Viṣṇu.
सर्वदंसर्वगंसर्वंसर्वप्राणिहृदिस्थितम्।
भस्मोद्धूलितदेहस्तुजटामण्डलमण्डितः॥१,२.१३॥
sarvadaṃ sarvagaṃ sarvaṃ sarvaprāṇihṛdisthitam
bhasmoddhūlitadehastu jaṭāmaṇḍalamaṇḍitaḥ | 1,2.13||
He gives everything and moves everything and resides in the hearts of all living beings.
विष्णोराराधनार्थंमेव्रतचर्यापितामह।
तमेवगत्वापृच्छामःसारंयंचिन्तयाम्यहम्॥१,२.१४॥
viṣṇorārādhanārthaṃ me vratacaryā pitāmaha
tameva gatvā pṛcchāmaḥ sāraṃ yaṃ cintayāmyaham | 1,2.14||
O grandfather, I have observed a vow to worship Lord Viṣṇu. Let us go to Him and inquire about the essence of what I am thinking of.
विष्णुंजिष्णुंपद्मनाभंहरिंदेहविवर्जितम्।
शुचिंशुचिषदंहंसंतत्पदंपरमेश्वरम्॥१,२.१५॥
viṣṇuṃ jiṣṇuṃ padmanābhaṃ hariṃ dehavivarjitam
śuciṃ śuciṣadaṃ haṃsaṃ tatpadaṃ parameśvaram | 1,2.15||
I worship Lord Viṣṇu, Lord Viṣṇu, Lord Padmanābha, Lord Hari, who is devoid of all material bodies.
युक्तासर्वात्मनात्मानंतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
यस्मिन्विश्वानिभूतानितिष्ठन्तिचविशन्तिच॥१,२.१६॥
yuktā sarvātmanātmānaṃ taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
yasminviśvāni bhūtāni tiṣṭhanti ca viśanti ca | 1,2.16||
On behalf of all the souls, I meditate on the Supreme Soul of all living beings.
In whom the universes reside and enter.
गुणभूतानिभूतेशेसूत्रेमणिगणाइव।
सहस्राक्षंसहस्राङ्घ्रिंसहस्रोरुंवराननम्॥१,२.१७॥
guṇabhūtāni bhūteśe sūtre maṇigaṇā iva
sahasrākṣaṃ sahasrāṅghriṃ sahasroruṃ varānanam | 1,2.17||
The Supreme Personality of Godhead has thousands of eyes, thousands of feet, thousands of thighs and a beautiful face.
अणीयसामणीयांसंस्थविष्ठंचस्थवीयसाम्।
गरीयसांगरिष्ठंचश्रेष्ठंचश्रेयसामपि॥१,२.१८॥
aṇīyasāmaṇīyāṃsaṃ sthaviṣṭhaṃ ca sthavīyasām
garīyasāṃ gariṣṭhaṃ ca śreṣṭhaṃ ca śreyasāmapi | 1,2.18||
Inferior to the lowest, the best among the best, the greatest among the greatest and the best among the auspicious.
यंवाक्येष्वनुवाक्येषुनिषत्सूपनिषत्सुच।
गृणन्तिसत्यकर्माणंसत्यंसत्येषुसामसु॥१,२.१९॥
yaṃ vākyeṣvanuvākyeṣu niṣatsūpaniṣatsu ca
gṛṇanti satyakarmāṇaṃ satyaṃ satyeṣu sāmasu | 1,2.19||
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is glorified in all the Vedic literatures known as Anuvākya and Sūpaniṣads.
पुराणपुरुषःप्रोक्तोब्रह्माप्रोक्तोद्विजातिषु।
क्षयेसङ्कर्षणःप्रोक्तस्तमुपास्यमुपास्महे॥१,२.२०॥
purāṇa puruṣaḥ prokto brahmā prokto dvijātiṣu
kṣaye saṅkarṣaṇaḥ proktastamupāsyamupāsmahe | 1,2.20||
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is described in the Purāṇas as Brahmā, and among the brāhmaṇas He is described as Saṅkarṣaṇa.
यस्मिंल्लोकाःस्फुरन्तीमेजलेशकुनयोयथा।
ऋतमेकाक्षरंब्रह्मयत्तत्सदसतःपरम्॥१,२.२१॥
yasmiṃllokāḥ sphurantīme jale śakunayo yathā
ṛtamekākṣaraṃ brahma yattatsadasataḥ param | 1,2.21||
The Supreme Absolute One, who is transcendental to all causes and effects, is transcendental to the one syllable of the Supreme Absolute Truth.
अर्चयन्तिचयंदेवायक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः।
यस्याग्निरास्यंद्यौर्मूर्धाखंनाभिश्चरणौक्षितिः॥१,२.२२॥
arcayanti ca yaṃ devā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ
yasyāgnirāsyaṃ dyaurmūrdhā khaṃ nābhiścaraṇau kṣitiḥ | 1,2.22||
All the demigods, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas and serpents worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead. His mouth is fire, the heavens are His head, the sky is His navel, and the earth is His feet.
चन्द्रादित्यौचनयनेतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
यस्यत्रिलोकीजठरेमस्यकाष्ठाश्चबाहवः॥१,२.२३॥
candrādityau ca nayane taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
yasya trilokī jaṭhare masya kāṣṭhāśca bāhavaḥ | 1,2.23||
I meditate upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead in whose eyes the moon and the sun reside.
यस्योच्छ्वासश्चपवनःतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
यस्यकेशेषुजीमूतानद्यःसर्वाङ्गसन्धिषु॥१,२.२४॥
yasyocchvāsaśca pavanaḥ taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
yasya keśeṣu jīmūtā nadyaḥ sarvāṅgasandhiṣu | 1,2.24||
I meditate upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead whose breath is the wind and whose hair is covered with clouds and rivers flowing through the joints of all His limbs.
कुक्षौसमुद्राश्चत्वारस्तंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
परःकालात्परोयज्ञात्परःसदसतश्चयः॥१,२.२५॥
kukṣau samudrāścatvārastaṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
paraḥ kālātparo yajñātparaḥ sadasataścayaḥ | 1,2.25||
I meditate upon that Supreme Personality of Godhead, in whose abdomen is the four oceans. He is transcendental to time and transcendental to sacrifice .He is the source of all causes and effects.
अनादिरादिर्विश्वस्यतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
मनसश्चन्द्रमायस्यचक्षुषोश्चदिवाकरः॥१,२.२६॥
anādirādirviśvasya taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
manasaścandramā yasya cakṣuṣośca divākaraḥ | 1,2.26||
I meditate upon that Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has no beginning and whose mind is the moon and whose eyes are the sun.
मुखादग्निश्चसंजज्ञेतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
पद्य्भांयस्यक्षितिर्जाताश्रोत्राभ्यांचतथादिशः॥१,२.२७॥
mukhādagniśca saṃjajñe taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
padybhāṃ yasya kṣitirjātā śrotrābhyāṃ ca tathā diśaḥ | 1,2.27||
From His mouth came fire, and I meditate upon Him whose feet produced the earth and whose ears produced the directions.
मूर्धभागाद्दिवंयस्यतंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
सर्गश्चप्रतिसर्गश्चवंशोमन्वन्तराणिच॥१,२.२८॥
mūrdhabhāgāddivaṃ yasya taṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
sargaśca pratisargaśca vaṃśo manvantarāṇi ca | 1,2.28||
I meditate upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose head is the source of the heavenly planets.
वंशानुचरितंयस्मात्तंदेवंचिन्तयाम्यहम्।
यंध्यायाम्यहमेतस्मादूजामःसारमीक्षितुम्॥१,२.२९॥
vaṃśānucaritaṃ yasmāttaṃ devaṃ cintayāmyaham
yaṃ dhyāyāmyahametasmādūjāmaḥ sāramīkṣitum | 1,2.29||
I meditate upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the source of all my dynasties.
ब्रह्मोवाच।
इत्युक्तोऽहंपुरारुद्रःश्वेतद्वीपनिवासिनम्।
स्तुत्वाप्रणम्यतंविष्णुंश्रोतुकामस्थितःसुरैः॥१,२.३०॥
brahmovāca
ityukto’haṃ purā rudraḥ śvetadvīpanivāsinam
stutvā praṇamya taṃ viṣṇuṃ śrotukāma sthitaḥ suraiḥ | 1,2.30||
Lord Brahma said In the past Lord Śiva addressed Lord Viṣṇu who lived on the island of Śveta.
अस्माकंमध्यतोरुद्रउवाचपरमेश्वरम्।
सारान्त्सारतरंविष्णुंपृष्टवांस्तंप्रणम्यवै॥१,२.३१॥
asmākaṃ madhyato rudra uvāca parameśvaram
sārāntsārataraṃ viṣṇuṃ pṛṣṭavāṃstaṃ praṇamya vai | 1,2.31||
Lord Śiva, who was in the midst of us, spoke to Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, about the essence of all things.
ब्रह्मोवाच।
यथापप्रच्छमांव्यासस्तथासौभगवान्भवः।
पप्रच्छविष्णुंदेवाद्यैःशृण्वताममरैःसह॥१,२.३२॥
brahmovāca
yathā papraccha māṃ vyāsa stathāsau bhagavānbhavaḥ
papraccha viṣṇuṃ devādyaiḥ śṛṇvatāmamaraiḥ saha | 1,2.32||
Lord Brahmā said: Just as Vyāsadeva inquired from me, Lord Śiva inquired of Lord Viṣṇu in the hearing of the demigods and other demigods.
रुद्रउवाच।
हरेकथयदेवेश ! देवदेवःकईश्वरः।
कोध्येयःकश्चवैपूज्यःकैर्व्रतैस्तुष्यतेपरः॥१,२.३३॥
rudra uvāca
hare kathaya deveśa ! devadevaḥ ka īśvaraḥ
ko dhyeyaḥ kaśca vai pūjyaḥ kairvratai stuṣyate paraḥ | 1,2.33||
Rudra said, Hare tell me, Lord of the gods!Who is the lord of the gods? Who is to be meditated upon? Who is to be worshiped? By what vows can the Supreme Lord be satisfied?
कैर्धर्मैःकैश्चनियमैःकयावाधर्मपूजया।
केनाचारेणतुष्टःस्यात्किंतद्रूपंचतस्यवै॥१,२.३४॥
kairdharmaiḥ kaiśca niyamaiḥ kayā vā dharmapūjayā
kenācāreṇa tuṣṭaḥ syātkiṃ tadrūpaṃ ca tasya vai | 1,2.34||
By what religious rituals and worship of religious principles can the Supreme Lord be satisfied? What is his form?
कस्माद्देवाज्जगज्जातंजगत्पालयतेचकः।
कीदृशैरवतारैश्चकस्मिन्यातिलयंजगत्॥१,२.३५॥
kasmāddevājjagajjātaṃ jagatpālayate cakaḥ
kīdṛśairavatāraiśca kasminyāti layaṃ jagat | 1,2.35||
Why is the universe born of the demigods? What kind of incarnations does the universe maintain? In what way does the universe annihilate?
सर्गश्चप्रतिसर्गश्चवंशोमन्वन्तराणिच।
कस्माद्देवात्प्रवर्तन्तेकस्मिमन्नेतत्प्रतिष्ठितम्॥१,२.३६॥
sargaśca pratisargaśca vaṃśo manvantarāṇi ca
kasmāddevātpravartante kasmimannetatpratiṣṭhitam | 1,2.36||
Why did creation, reproduction, lineage and manvantara originate from the Supreme Personality of Godhead? From whom and from who is it established?
एतत्सर्वंहरे ! ब्रूहियच्चान्यदपिकिञ्चन।
परमेश्वरमाहात्म्यंयुक्तयोगादिकंतथा॥१,२.३७॥
etatsarvaṃ Hare ! brūhi yaccānyadapi kiñcana
parameśvaramāhātmyaṃ yuktayogādikaṃ tathā | 1,2.37||
All this, Hare!
Please also tell me something else about the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and about the practice of yogic yoga.
तथाष्टादशविद्याश्चहरीरुद्रंततोऽब्रवीत्।
tathāṣṭādaśa vidyāśca harī rudraṃ tato’bravīt
तथाष्टादशविद्याश्चहरीरुद्रंततोऽब्रवीत्।
हरिरुवाच।
शृणुरुद्र ! प्रवक्ष्यामिब्रह्मणाचसुरैःसह॥१,२.३८॥
hariruvāca
śṛṇu rudra ! pravakṣyāmi brahmaṇā ca suraiḥ saha | 1,2.38||
Hari said: Hear, O Rudra!I shall now explain it to you, along with Lord Brahmā and the demigods.
अहंहिदेवोदेवानांसर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वरः।
अहंध्येयश्चपूज्यश्चस्तुत्योहंस्ततिभिःसुरैः॥१,२.३९॥
ahaṃ hi devo devānāṃ sarvalokeśvareśvaraḥ
ahaṃ dhyeyaśca pūjyaśca stutyohaṃ statibhiḥ suraiḥ | 1,2.39||
I am the lord of the demigods and the lord of all the worlds. I am worshipable and worshipable by all the demigods.
अहंहिपूजितोरुद्र ! ददामिपरमांगतिम्।
नियमैश्चव्रतैस्तुष्टआचारेणचमानवैः॥१,२.४०॥
ahaṃ hi pūjito rudra ! dadāmi paramāṃ gatim
niyamaiśca vrataistuṣṭa ācāreṇa ca mānavaiḥ | 1,2.40||
I am the worshiped Rudra!By observing regulations vows and satisfying human conduct I shall bestow upon them the supreme destination.
जगत्स्थितेरहंबीजंजगत्कर्तात्वहंशिव ! ।
दुष्टनिग्रहकर्ताहिधर्मगोप्तात्वहंहर ! ॥१,२.४१॥
jagatsthiterahaṃ bījaṃ jagatkartā tvahaṃ śiva !
duṣṭanigrahakartā hi dharmagoptā tvahaṃ hara ! | 1,2.41||
I am the seed of the universe, and I am the creator of the universe, Shiva!
अवतारैश्चमत्स्याद्यैःपालयाम्यखिलंजगत्।
अहंमन्त्राश्चमन्त्रार्थःपूजाध्यानपरोह्यहम्॥१,२.४२॥
avatāraiśca matsyādyaiḥ pālayāmyakhilaṃ jagat
ahaṃ mantrāśca mantrārthaḥ pūjādhyānaparo hyaham | 1,2.42||
I rule the entire universe by My incarnations as fish and other creatures I am the object of mantras I am the object of worship and meditation
स्वर्गादीनांचकर्ताहंस्वर्गादीन्यहमेवच।
योगीयोगोहमेवाद्यःपुराणान्यहमेवच॥१,२.४३॥
svargādīnāṃ ca kartāhaṃ svargādīnyahameva ca
yogī yogohamevādyaḥ purāṇānyahamevaca | 1,2.43||
I am the creator of the heavenly planets, and I am the origin of the heavenly planets. I am the yogī, the real yogi, and I am the Purāṇas.
ज्ञाताश्रोतातथामन्तावक्तावक्तव्यमेवच।
सर्वःसर्वात्मकोदेवोभुक्तिमुक्तिकरःपरः॥१,२.४४॥
jñātā śrotā tathā mantā vaktā vaktavyameva ca
sarvaḥ sarvātmako devo bhuktimuktikaraḥ paraḥ | 1,2.44||
He is the knower the hearer the contemplator the speaker and the speaker He is the all-pervading Supreme Lord who bestows enjoyment and liberation
ध्यानंपूजोपहारोऽहंमण्डलान्यहमेवच।
इतिहासान्यहंरुद्र ! सर्ववेदाह्यहंशिव ! ॥१,२.४५॥
dhyānaṃ pūjopahāro’haṃ maṇḍalānyahameva ca
itihāsānyahaṃ rudra ! sarvavedā hyahaṃ śiva ! | 1,2.45||
I am the meditation, the offering of worship, and I am the circles. I am the histories, O Rudra!
सर्वज्ञानान्यहंशम्भो ! ब्रह्मात्माहमहंशिव ! ।
अहंब्रह्मासर्वलोकःसर्वदेवात्मकोह्यहम्॥१,२.४६॥
sarvajñānānyahaṃ śambho ! brahmātmāhamahaṃ śiva !
ahaṃ brahmā sarvalokaḥ sarvadevātmako hyaham | 1,2.46||
I am all-knowing, Shambho!I am Brahmatma, I am Shiva!I am Brahmā, the entire universe, and I am the embodiment of all the demigods.
अहंसाक्षात्सदाचारोधर्मोऽहंवैष्णवोह्यहम्।
वर्णाश्रमास्तथाचाहंतद्धर्मोऽहंपुरातनः॥१,२.४७॥
ahaṃ sākṣātsadācāro dharmo’haṃ vaiṣṇavo hyaham
varṇāśramāstathā cāhaṃ taddharmo’haṃ purātanaḥ | 1,2.47||
I am verily the Dharma of virtuous conduct; I am Vaishnava; and also I am the ancient Dharma of the varnas and asramas.
यमोऽहंनियमोरुद्र ! व्रतानिविविधानिच।
अहंसूर्यस्तथाचन्द्रोमङ्गलादीन्यहंतथा॥१,२.४८॥
yamo’haṃ niyamo rudra ! vratāni vividhāni ca
ahaṃ sūryastathā candro maṅgalādīnyahaṃ tathā | 1,2.48||
Yama, I am Niyama, Rudra!
पुरामांगरुडःपक्षीतपसाराधयद्भुवि।
तुष्टऊचेवरंब्रूहिमत्तोवव्रेवरंसतु॥१,२.४९॥
purā māṃ garuḍaḥ pakṣī tapasārādhayadbhuvi
tuṣṭa ūce varaṃ brūhi matto vavre varaṃ sa tu | 1,2.49||
In the past Angaruda worshiped the birds and austerities on earth.
गरुडउवाच।
मममाताचविनतानागैर्दासीकृताहरे।
यथाहंदेवताञ्जित्वाचामृतंह्यानयामितत्॥१,२.५०॥
garuḍa uvāca
mama mātā ca vinatā nāgairdāsīkṛtā hare
yathāhaṃ deva tāñjitvā cāmṛtaṃ hyānayāmi tat | 1,2.50||
Garuda said: As I conquered the gods and brought this nectar to my mother who was made a maidservant by the humble serpents.
दास्याद्विमोक्षयिष्यामियथाहंवाहनस्तव।
महाबलोमहावीर्यःसर्वज्ञोनागदारणः॥१,२.५१॥
dāsyādvimokṣayiṣyāmi yathāhaṃ vāhanastava
mahābalo mahāvīryaḥ sarvajño nāgadāraṇaḥ | 1,2.51||
I shall deliver him from his handmaid as I am your carrier, mighty in strength, mighty in valor, omniscient and destroyer of serpents.
पुराणसंहिताकर्तायथाहंस्यांतथाकुरुं।
purāṇasaṃhitākartā yathāhaṃ syāṃ tathā kuruṃ
विष्णुरुवाच।
यथात्वयोक्तंगरुडतथासर्वंभविष्यति॥१,२.५२॥
viṣṇuruvāca
yathā tvayoktaṃ garuḍa tathā sarvaṃ bhaviṣyati | 1,2.52||
Vishnu said: As you have said, O Garuda, so shall it all be.
नागदास्यान्मातरंत्वंविनतांमोक्षयिष्यसि।
देवादीन्सकलाञ्जित्वाचामृतंह्यानयिष्यसि॥१,२.५३॥
nāgadāsyānmātaraṃ tvaṃ vinatāṃ mokṣayiṣyasi
devādīnsakalāñjitvā cāmṛtaṃ hyānayiṣyasi | 1,2.53||
Thou shalt liberate the humble mother from the serpent-servant; having conquered all the gods and others, thou shalt bring nectar.
महाबलोवाहनस्त्वंभविष्यसिविषार्दनः।
पुराणंमत्प्रसादाच्चमममाहात्म्यवाचकम्॥१,२.५४॥
mahābalo vāhanastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi viṣārdanaḥ
purāṇaṃ matprasādācca mama māhātmyavācakam | 1,2.54||
Thou shalt be the carrier of mighty strength and the destroyer of poisons. By My grace the Puranas declare My greatness.
यदुक्तंमत्स्वरूपंचतवचाविर्भविष्यति।
गारुडंतवनाम्नातल्लोकेख्यातिंगमिष्यति॥१,२.५५॥
yaduktaṃ matsvarūpaṃ ca tava cāvirbhaviṣyati
gāruḍaṃ tava nāmnā talloke khyātiṃ gamiṣyati | 1,2.55||
That which has been said in My form shall appear in four forms.
यथाहंदेवदेवानांश्रीःख्यातोविनतासुत।
तथाख्यातिंपुराणेषुगारुडंगारुडैष्यति॥१,२.५६॥
As I am renowned as the goddess of fortune among the gods, O son of Vinata, so shall I be renowned in the Puranas as Garuda and Garuda.
yathāhaṃ devadevānāṃ śrīḥ khyāto vinatāsuta
tathā khyātiṃ purāṇeṣu gāruḍaṃ gāruḍaiṣyati | 1,2.56||
यथाहंकीर्तनीयोऽथतथात्वंगरुडात्मना।
मांध्यात्वापक्षिमुख्येदंपुराणंगदगारुडम्॥१,२.५७॥
yathāhaṃ kīrtanīyo’tha tathā tvaṃ garuḍātmanā
māṃ dhyātvā pakṣimukhyedaṃ purāṇaṃ gada gāruḍam | 1,2.57||
As I am to be chanted, so also by the Self of Garuda;
इत्युक्तोगरुडोरुद्र ! कश्यपायाहपृच्छते।
कश्यपोगारुडंश्रुत्वावृक्षंदग्धमजीवयत्॥१,२.५८॥
ityukto garuḍo rudra ! kaśyapāyāha pṛcchate
kaśyapo gāruḍaṃ śrutvā vṛkṣaṃ dagdhamajīvayat | 1,2.58||
It is said, Garuda Rudra! He asked Kasyapa. Kasyapa, hearing Garuda, revived the burnt tree.
स्वयंचान्यमनाभूत्वाविद्ययान्यान्यजीवयत्।
यक्षिओंउंस्वाहाजापीविद्ययंगारुडीपरा।
svayaṃ cānyamanā bhūtvā vidyayānyānya jīvayat
yakṣi oṃuṃsvāhājāpī vidyayaṃ gāruḍī parā
Swayamchanyamanabhutvavidyayanyajivayat.yakshionunsvahajapividyayangarudipara.
गरुडोक्तंगारुडंहिशृणुरुद्र ! मदात्मकम्॥१,२.५९॥
garuḍoktaṃ gāruḍaṃ hi śṛṇu rudra ! madātmakam | 1,2.59||
इतिश्रीगारुडेमहापुराणेपूर्वखण्डेप्रथमांशाख्येआचारकाण्डेश्रीगरुडमहापुराणोत्पत्तिनिरूपणंनामद्वितीयोऽध्यायः
iti śrīgāruḍe mahāpurāṇe pūrvakhaṇḍe prathamāṃśākhye ācārakāṇḍe śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇotpattinirūpaṇaṃ nāma dvitīyo’dhyāyaḥ
